The Story of Shweshwe

Dating back to around 1840 when French missionaries presented the patterns to the King Moshoeshoe, which locally then evolved into “Shweshwe”, the design was created and has since been worn by African woman. Due to it’s unique pattern it was originally used for ceremonies by many African cultures, in fact the fabric was popular for wedding ceremonies as bridal gowns; quite often the groom would be seen in matching outfit!

Why introduce your new baby to Shweshwe Designs?

Contrasting colours send strong signals to the baby’s brain and help stimulate brain growth and aid visual stimulation; besides the fabric is 100% natural cotton; it won’t irritate the babies skin and is hypoallergenic.

Colours

The original colour of Shweshwe was indigo blue, however during time many different colours and variations were introduced and today Shweshwe is a trademark of its own!

FAbric

The original Shweshwe fabric has a distinct characteristic in touch, smell and even taste.

The taste is a slight saltiness, and the fabric is quite stiff before being washed; we at Shweshwe Designs of course take great care of washing it the first time before it is hand sown into the items we proudly offer.
